Palisades, CA - With the Sounders Women and Pali Blues already scheduled to meet for the Western Conference Championship on July 22, the final match of the regular season was inconsequential. However, with two sets of top level competitors, and a chance to evaluate the teams in a training match setting, the Pali Blues won a competitive 1-0 match on Sunday afternoon.
A large factor in the Pali Blues win over the Sounders was the recent schedule that Sounders were concluding. Having defeated Santa Clarita on Wednesday, and LA Strikers on Friday, the Sounders took on the top team of the Western Conference for their third game this week. The Blues previous match was a week ago, on July 8.
The match was a stalemate throughout the first half. The Sounders had a great chance to break open the scoring mid-way through the first half when Sophie Reiser ripped a low cross toward Lyndsey Patterson. The Sounders forward stretched out for the pass but Whitney Engen shielded Patterson enough for the ball to whiz past the front of the goal.
The Blues also had good chances in the first half, none better than a point blank header for Sasha Andrews off an in-swinging corner kick. Andrews drilled the header towards the goal, but the shot was neatly tipped onto the crossbar by Megan Kufeld for the save.
A few minutes later, a soft header made it past Kufeld on route to the goal. Left back, Annie Sittauer was there to clear the shot off the line.
The lone goal of the match came halfway through the second half. Substitute, Liz Eddy drove a low cross towards the front post of the Kufeld's net. Liz Bogus found a quick touch in between Sounders defenders and goalkeeper to direct the ball into the near corner of the net.
The Pali win keeps their undefeated season alive with 13 wins and one tie. The Sounders Women loss wraps up the regular season with 10 wins, three losses, and one tie for 2nd place in the Western Conference. The two teams will match up next week, July 22nd, for the Western Conference Championship. The match will kick off at 1pm, with radio coverage on 1150AM and 1150kknw.com starting at 12:45pm.
