Sounders Women win WPSL Western Conference Championship, head to nationals

The Sounders Women continued their undefeated season with a busy weekend at Starfire Sports in Tukwila, Washington.  Hosting the WPSL Western Conference Finals, the Sounders Women beat LA Villa FC and FC Tucson to win the Western Conference Championship and book their ticket to the WPSL National Final Four.

With all to play for on Saturday, July 14th, the Sounders Women hosted LA Villa FC at 12pm for the first of two WPSL Western Conference semi-finals.    The game started off fast for both teams with the Sounders Women finally hitting pay dirt in the 25th minute on a goal by Aleea Gwerder.  LA Villa FC came right back and tied the game at 1-1 in the 30th minute and the teams would go into the half at 1-1.

The second half brought fireworks with Bethany Balcer continuing her form with a 49th minute goal and Stephanie Spiekerman unleashing an absolute worm-burner shot from 30 yards out from goal in the 50th minute.  Balcer then punched another goal in at the 63rd minute.  The Sounders Women now led 4-1 but Villa would get one back in the 76th minute on a penalty kick then find a late goal to give the Sounders Women a 4-3 win heading into the Sunday Championship game.  The Fresno Freeze succumbed to FC Tucson in the other semi-final to book a Sounders Women versus FC Tucson final on Sunday, July 15th.

A 1pm Western Conference Championship game saw water breaks again as the heat piled off the turf at Starfire Sports Stadium.  Jessica Udovich hammered home a 20 yard shot in the 33rd minute to break the dead lock and send the game into the half at 1-0.

FC Tucson came out firing with a goal in the 50th minute before Olivia Van der Jagt found another goal in the 53rd for the Sounders Women.   Not to be outdone, the FC Tucson ladies scored again the 59th minute.  The game was heated for the next 20 minutes with both teams trying to find the winner.   Balcer came through with a goal in the 75th minute and Celia Delgado sealed the deal with an 87th minute penalty kick.  With a score line of 4-2, the Sounders Women won the 2018 WPSL Western Conference Championship and booked their ticket to Norman, Oklahoma on July 20th and July21th for the WPSL National Final Four.

The Sounders Women will play defending national champions Fire and Ice SC on Saturday, July 20th.  If the Sounders Women are victorious, they will play for the WPSL National Championship on Sunday, July 21th at 12pm against the winner of Chicago Red Stars Reserves and Pensacola FC.  Stay tuned for live stream links @sounderswomen and www.sounderwomen.com.
