Calkins earns License, Sounders Women face big weekend

Sounders Women head into crucial weekend, Coach Calkins earns Senior A License

It has been a busy week for Sounders Women Head Coach Kim Calkins and the Sounders Women WPSL team.  Fresh off taking six points on a 2-game road trip to Portland, Oregon this past weekend, Coach Calkins earned her USSF Senior A license.  Calkins is the first female coach to earn the new revamped license in the United States, but not to get too cozy, she must lead her team into a must win weekend with the new knowledge and perseverance needed to get points.

The Sounders Women face the Issaquah Gunners on Friday, June 16th at Issaquah high school at 7pm.  This game pits first place Issaquah against second place Sounders Women after Issaquah took the opening game 1-0.   Issaquah is led by Macy Jo Harrison with 3 goals and 3 assists and the Gunners team is coming off their second tie on the year versus OSA.

After the Friday game, the women will face NSGSC again on Sunday, June 18th at Starfire Sports Complex at 7pm.   The Sounders Women took game one against NSGSC 3-2 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and NSGSC is close behind Sounders Women and Issaquah in the 3rd position in the WPSL NW Division.    NSGSC beat the Capital Timbers this past week by a score of 2-0.

With only 8 league games, every point is crucial and the Sounders Women are prepared for the weekend with one of the area’s most qualified coaches.  Coach Calkins did her final assessment for the USSF Senior A License this past week at Starfire Sports Complex with Jay Hoffman in town to assess her work over the past year.

“US Soccer has recently invested an increased amount of resources and energy into making the licensing process more meaningful for the long term development of each individual coach,” said Calkins, “I appreciated the constant guidance and support from the instructors throughout the 10-month process and the opportunity to apply newly gained information within the context of my own team’s performance environment.  I am grateful for the support from Washington Youth Soccer and the Sounders Women in completing the requirements for the course.  I am also proud of being the first woman in the United States to achieve the Senior A license and I am certain there will be many more to follow in the near future.”

For now, Coach Calkins must prepare her troops for a must win weekend against the other top two teams in the WPSL NW Division. Come check out the future of the game!
